Thomians’ Win the Battle of the Gold’s

Old Thomians’ beat Past Pupils of GSC comprehensively by 131 runs in the annual cricket encounter organised by MOTA Colombo & Colombo branch of PPA GSC for 2023. It was an exciting day of fellowship, sports and fun when The Battle of the Gold’s & Red’s kicked off on 11th February 2023 at the S De S Jayasinghe grounds in Dehiwala.

The day was filled with fun banter between old friends and new, with a cricket match, followed by a netball match between the past pupils of St. Thomas Girls School and Sangamitta Balika School Matale.

The event celebrated sportsmanship, camaraderie, and good old-fashioned competition and drew an exciting crowd.

The batsmen from St. Thomas College were on fire, hitting some powerful shots and added 172 Runs to the board in 18.5 overs with 40 from the bat of Ravindra Abeykoon, who won the Best Batsman award, while Chinthaka Gajendra of GSC was the best bowler for his spell that captured four wickets for ten runs. However, Science College fought back with some impressive batting displays. Still, it was unsuccessful in reaching the target set by St. Thomas College to win the coveted Rev. Fr. Aiden De Silva & Rupasinghe Trophy. Rohith Jagath Bandara of STC won the Man of the Match trophy for making 28 runs with the bat and four wickets for 15 runs with the ball.

Next was the netball match between the past pupils of St. Thomas Girls School and Sangamitta Balika School Matale. The players displayed agility, speed, and precision as they passed the ball, dodged defenders, and shot for the goal. It was a close match, and the score between the two teams kept seesawing. Ultimately, Sangamiththa Old Girls School emerged victorious and retained the coveted Vera M Armond Trophy for the second year.

The event had plenty of fun games and activities for adults and kids. There were tug-of-war, musical chairs and even a mini carnival with fast food and other treats. The participants and spectators enjoyed the day, cheering on their favourite teams, meeting old friends, and making new ones. In conclusion, the Battle of the Gold & Red was an exciting day of sports and fun, filled with excitement, passion, camaraderie, and friendship. The event was a testament to the power of sports to unite people, and it will be remembered fondly by all those who attended.
